ONVERWACHT FARM | WELLINGTON

Onverwacht Farm is one of the smaller properties in a network of old farms in the historical Bo-vlei in Wellington. Like other gardens of the era, this one boasts many large oak trees and was planted with large tracts of kikuyu lawn and borders of Agapanthus and Hydrangeas.

Working closely with the clients, we started the design work in 2023, replacing most of the lawns and borders with wispy soft plantings – a combination of grasses and perennials to create a softer and more contemporary garden. The plantings have started to seed the beds, creating an abundant palette of flowers and seed-heads.

The garden requires relatively little maintenance – tweaking the plantings and managing the more aggressive perennials to give the slower plants space and time to establish.
